Start with the checklist and work through each section at your own pace.
This checklist is for general educational purposes and does not provide individualized financial, investment, tax, or legal advice. Completing the checklist does not establish retirement readiness.
Your Annual Retirement Checklist
Review the following 20 items to understand what you have already addressed and what deserves attention before your next annual retirement review.
Annual Review Overview
Percentage of applicable checklist items completed. This is not a retirement readiness score.
Your annual review has not started yet.
Select the year this annual retirement review applies to.
Your privacy matters. When local saving is enabled, checklist selections are stored in your browser. Avoid entering sensitive account information. Clearing browser storage may remove saved progress.
This checklist provides general educational guidance. Its completion percentage measures reviewed tasks, not retirement readiness, investment performance, or financial security. Individual circumstances and applicable retirement rules may differ.
Retirement Contributions Review
Review how much money is going into your retirement accounts and compare your personal contributions with your annual savings goal.
Enter Your Annual Contributions
Use contributions made during the review year. Enter amounts in U.S. dollars.
Include your traditional and Roth 401(k) employee contributions. Do not include employer deposits.
Include contributions to traditional and Roth IRAs. Do not count transfers, rollovers, or investment growth.
Include contributions to other qualifying retirement arrangements that are not already counted above.
Enter employer matching and other employer retirement deposits. Do not include these in your personal contribution goal.
Enter your own annual savings target. This is not an IRS contribution limit. Consider your available income, account eligibility, and applicable rules.
Remember: Contribution Limits and Eligibility Rules May Apply
Retirement contribution limits vary by year, account type, age, income, and other circumstances. Employer contributions generally follow different rules from employee elective deferrals.
Your personal contribution goal is a planning target, not a determination of how much you are legally permitted to contribute. Refer to current IRS guidance and your retirement plan documents.
Review IRS Retirement Contribution Rules ↗Contributions entered here are for educational planning purposes. The results do not include investment returns, account balances, taxes, withdrawals, or future growth. Do not enter account numbers or other sensitive financial information.
Investments & Asset Allocation Review
Compare how your retirement portfolio is invested today with the allocation you intend to maintain. Identify changes that may deserve a closer look.
Enter Your Investment Mix
Enter percentages for your combined retirement portfolio. Each allocation column should add up to exactly 100%.
Both allocations total 100%.
Additional Investment Review
Why Review Asset Allocation Every Year?
Your investments may grow at different rates, causing your portfolio to move away from its original allocation. A periodic review can help you understand whether your portfolio still reflects your investment goals.
Diversification, investment costs, retirement timing, and your ability to tolerate market losses all matter. Rebalancing decisions may also involve transaction costs and tax consequences.
Learn About Asset Allocation — Investor.gov ↗Review your investments periodically, document important changes, and consider whether professional guidance would help with complex decisions.
This investment review is educational and does not recommend any specific portfolio allocation, investment, security, or trading activity. Allocation differences do not establish whether rebalancing is appropriate. Percentages entered here are estimates supplied by the user.

Annual Retirement Checklist Questions & Answers
Understand how to use your annual retirement review, interpret your progress, and decide which financial details deserve attention.
How often should I review my retirement plan?
A full review once a year can help you keep important retirement decisions organized.
Additional reviews may be useful after major changes such as a new job, salary increase, retirement account change, or adjustment to your long-term goals.
The purpose is to review your strategy and account information, not to react to every short-term market movement.
What should I check in my 401(k) every year?
Start with your contribution amount, employer matching rules, investment choices, account fees, and beneficiary information.
You may also need to review vesting, plan changes, and applicable contribution limits. Your employer's plan documents provide details about its specific rules.
Does completing this checklist mean I am ready to retire?
No. The checklist measures how many annual review tasks you have completed.
It does not determine whether your savings can support your retirement expenses.
Retirement readiness depends on additional factors, including savings balances, expected income, retirement spending, investment assumptions, inflation, and the length of retirement.
How do I know if my retirement contributions are enough?
There is no single contribution amount that works for everyone.
Your savings target depends on your retirement timeline, existing savings, future spending needs, available income, and other financial priorities.
The contribution review compares your entered contributions with a personal goal. It does not calculate your legally permitted contribution amount or determine whether your savings will be sufficient.
Should I rebalance my investments every year?
Reviewing your allocation annually can help you identify changes in the mix of stocks, bonds, cash, and other investments.
However, a difference between your current and target allocation does not automatically mean you should trade.
Rebalancing decisions depend on your investment strategy, acceptable allocation ranges, transaction costs, taxes, and account characteristics.
Can I save my checklist and download my results?
The interactive tool is designed to save checklist selections and action-plan information locally in your browser.
Once the export functionality is enabled, you can prepare a report containing selected checklist results, financial figures, and planned actions.
Local browser data may be lost if you clear your browser storage or use a different device. Keep a separate copy of any report you want to retain.
