Projections use hypothetical annualized returns with monthly compounding and contributions. Values are rounded for display. The underlying calculations retain precision.
Why Does Time Matter?
Starting earlier gives your savings more time to potentially benefit from compounding. However, investment returns are not guaranteed, and market losses can affect your final balance.
Where Your Retirement Savings Come From
Your retirement balance is more than the money you contribute. Explore how your starting savings, future deposits, and potential investment growth work together.

What Does Each Calculator Field Mean?
Understanding these inputs will help you make more useful retirement projections.
Current Age
Your age today. Together with your planned retirement age, it determines the number of years in the projection.
Planned Retirement Age
The age when you expect to stop making regular retirement contributions. This calculator estimates savings accumulation up to that age.
Current Retirement Savings
The amount already set aside for retirement, such as money in a 401(k), IRA, or other investment account you want included in the projection.
Monthly Contribution
The total amount added to your retirement savings each month. Include your own deposits and any employer contributions you expect to receive, without counting them twice.
Expected Annual Return
A hypothetical annualized investment return used to model growth. Actual investment returns fluctuate and may be negative. The selected rate is not a guaranteed outcome.
Annual Inflation Rate
An assumed yearly increase in prices. The calculator uses it to estimate how much your future retirement balance would be worth in today's dollars.
Annual Contribution Increase
The percentage by which your monthly contribution increases each year. Enter 0% if you want to keep the monthly amount unchanged.
Try a Simple Retirement Savings Scenario
Use these sample assumptions to explore how consistent saving might develop over a long retirement timeline.
These figures are illustrative inputs, not investment recommendations or forecasts. Use the calculator to generate the corresponding projection.
Three Ways to Test Your Retirement Plan
Increase Your Monthly Savings
Compare your current contribution with a slightly higher amount to see how additional deposits may change the projected balance.
Test Different Returns
Run projections using lower and higher hypothetical returns. This helps illustrate how sensitive your results are to market assumptions.
Explore Your Retirement Age
Compare retiring earlier or later. A different timeline changes the number of contributions and the period available for compounding.
Build Your Retirement Savings Projection
Return to the calculator, enter your information, and explore what your savings could look like at retirement.
Understanding Your Retirement Savings Projection
A retirement savings estimate is a starting point, not a promise. Understanding what drives your projected balance can help you compare scenarios and make more informed long-term financial decisions.
What Does Your Projected Balance Tell You?
Your projected retirement balance represents how much money your selected savings and investment assumptions could produce by your planned retirement age.
It combines your starting savings, future contributions, and estimated investment gains or losses.
However, a projected account balance does not automatically tell you whether you will have enough money to retire. That also depends on your future expenses, other income sources, taxes, and how long your savings need to last.
How Compound Growth Can Help Savings Build
Compounding occurs when investment earnings remain invested and can generate additional earnings in later periods.
Contributions Build Your Base
Each deposit adds more money to your retirement savings. Consistent contributions can help grow the amount you have invested.
Investment Returns Affect Growth
Your investments may earn returns over time. Positive returns increase your balance, while negative returns reduce it.
Time Can Amplify the Effect
Over longer periods, reinvested earnings may contribute a larger share of your balance. Actual market performance will vary.
Remember: This calculator uses a constant hypothetical annualized return for projections. Real investments do not grow at a fixed rate every year.
Future Dollars Are Not the Same as Today's Dollars
Inflation reduces the purchasing power of money when prices increase over time. That means a future retirement balance may buy less than the same dollar amount could buy today.
The calculator shows both the nominal future balance and an inflation-adjusted estimate so you can better understand the difference.
With 2.5% annual inflation, a future balance of $ 100,000 in 20 years would have purchasing power equivalent to approximately $ 61,000 today.

What This Retirement Calculator Does Not Include
This tool focuses on accumulating retirement savings before retirement. Several additional factors can affect your actual financial outcome.
Taxes and Withdrawal Rules
Tax treatment varies across retirement accounts. The calculator does not estimate taxes on contributions, investment earnings, or withdrawals.
Investment Fees
Account fees and investment expenses can reduce long-term growth. They are not calculated separately.
Social Security Income
The projection does not include Social Security retirement benefits or other sources of retirement income.
Market Volatility
Real investment returns fluctuate from year to year. A constant-return projection cannot represent every possible market outcome.
Retirement Withdrawals
This tool estimates savings up to retirement. It does not model spending, withdrawals, or portfolio depletion after retirement begins.
Contribution Limits
The calculator does not enforce annual contribution limits for individual retirement account types. Actual limits depend on applicable rules.
Four Factors That Can Change Your Outcome
How Much You Save
Higher contributions add more capital to your retirement accounts and may increase the amount available for growth.
How Long You Invest
A longer savings period usually means more contribution opportunities and more time for potential compounding.
Your Investment Performance
Returns influence your final balance. Lower-than-expected returns or sustained losses can substantially reduce it.
Inflation Over Time
Higher inflation reduces what your future savings may be able to purchase, even when the account balance grows.

Retirement Savings Calculator FAQs
Find answers to common questions about retirement savings projections, monthly contributions, investment returns, and inflation-adjusted estimates.
How much should I save for retirement each month?
The amount depends on your current age, existing savings, retirement goals, expected expenses, and available income. There is no single monthly contribution that works for everyone.
Start with an amount that fits your budget. Then use the calculator to compare different monthly contributions and see how they affect your estimated future balance.
What is a reasonable investment return to use for retirement planning?
Expected returns depend on your investments, asset allocation, investment expenses, and market conditions.
Instead of relying on one assumed return, compare several hypothetical scenarios. For example, you could test 4%, 6%, and 8% annual returns to understand how sensitive your projection is to investment performance.
These are illustrative assumptions, not predictions or guaranteed returns. The calculator does not separately deduct investment fees.
Does the calculator include compound interest?
Yes. The calculator models compound growth by applying an assumed investment return to your accumulated balance each month. Contributions are added at the end of each month.
The annual return is converted into an effective monthly rate, so the model remains mathematically consistent with the annual assumption.
Real investment returns fluctuate, and compounding can also magnify the effects of investment losses.
What is the difference between future dollars and today's dollars?
Future dollars represent your projected account balance at retirement without adjusting for inflation.
Today's dollars express that future balance in terms of current purchasing power, using your selected inflation rate.
For retirement planning, comparing both values helps you distinguish the amount you may accumulate from what it may be able to purchase.
Can I include my 401(k), IRA, and employer match?
Yes. You can combine existing retirement balances in the Current Retirement Savings field when you want to model them using the same hypothetical investment return.
Your monthly contribution can include your own deposits and expected employer contributions, including a 401(k) match. Avoid counting the same contribution twice.
The calculator does not enforce account contribution limits or model the different tax treatments of retirement accounts.
What happens if I increase my retirement contribution every year?
Increasing your contributions adds more money to your retirement savings over time.
The Annual Contribution Increase field applies your selected percentage once every 12 months.
For example, a $ 300 monthly contribution with a 2% annual increase becomes $ 306 per month in the second year.
Enter 0% if you want contributions to remain constant.
Does this calculator tell me whether I have enough money to retire?
No. This calculator estimates how your retirement savings could accumulate before your selected retirement age.
Determining retirement readiness also requires estimating your future expenses, retirement income, taxes, withdrawals, and how long your money may need to last.
A projected savings balance is useful, but it is only one part of a complete retirement plan.
Can I download the retirement savings calculator as an Excel worksheet?
Yes. Verestly provides a free Excel worksheet that allows you to edit retirement assumptions, review calculated estimates, and explore annual projections.
You can access the worksheet in the download section above.

How We Calculate Your Retirement Savings
Verestly is committed to making financial planning tools understandable, transparent, and useful for beginners. Here's how this calculator estimates retirement savings and which assumptions influence the results.
How the Retirement Projection Works
This calculator uses a deterministic accumulation model. It applies a hypothetical investment return to the accumulated balance and adds planned monthly contributions through your selected retirement age.
Projection Period
The number of years is calculated by subtracting your current age from your planned retirement age.
Monthly Investment Growth
The expected effective annual return is converted into an equivalent monthly rate before being applied to the accumulated balance.
Monthly Balance Update
The existing balance earns the assumed monthly return. The planned monthly contribution is then added at the end of the month.
Contribution Increases
Monthly contributions increase annually using the percentage selected by the user.
Investment Growth
Estimated investment growth equals the projected ending balance minus the initial savings and all additional contributions.
Inflation Adjustment
The ending balance is adjusted using the selected annual inflation rate to estimate its equivalent purchasing power in today's dollars.
Model consistency: The web calculator and companion Excel worksheet are designed to use the same formulas and contribution timing assumptions. Both must be validated against identical test scenarios before publication.
Important Calculation Assumptions
Monthly compounding: Investment growth is applied monthly using an effective monthly rate.
End-of-month contributions: Contributions are added after each month's modeled investment return.
Annual contribution increases: Contributions are adjusted after every 12 months of the projection.
Constant annualized return: The selected return is applied consistently throughout the model. Real market performance will vary.
Inflation adjustment: Purchasing power is estimated using a constant assumed annual inflation rate.
Excluded factors: The model does not separately calculate taxes, fees, withdrawals, Social Security benefits, or account contribution limits.
